As of this writing, I am gleefully waiting for Dragon Ball Super to be released. However, one thing I am not looking forward to is Funimation’s English dub of the show.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate English dubs outright and I usually watch about 3 or 4 episodes of a series in both English and Japanese to see which one I prefer. Hence why I watched Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and Death Note dubbed and Hellsing, Berserk and Miyazaki movies subbed.

However, I never felt that any of the dubs for Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z has done them justice. The current Funimation cast comes the closest but nowhere as good as it could be. Hence why I have written a list of voice actors who I feel would do a good job better portraying the characters. This isn’t meant to be any disrespect to any of the current voice actors, I just feel you’ve been miscast.

Lastly, I am absolutely stumped on who could play Piccolo as I can’t think of any western voice actors who could either the replicate performance or who do a performance that keeps the spirit of the character. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know (:

Bulma = Wendee Lee

Best known for: Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop), T.K. (Digimon) & Konata Izumi (Lucky Star)

This one is a bit of a cheat as Wendee Lee has actually voiced Bulma before in the Harmony Gold dub back in the 80s (though Bulma’s name was changed to Lena in that version). However, I feel that her Bulma was far superior to Tiffany Vollmer’s one, giving the role more confidence and charisma. I would be really happy if she respired the role.

Goku = Jessica D. Stone

Best known for: Makoto (Street Fighter IV series) & Stanley (Stanley)

I don’t know why it is so hard to cast a voice actor for Goku as no one seems to have got even close. Goku has a sense of naivety and childlike wonder that people who voice him seem to miss. Ian James Corlett’s Goku sounded way too much like a generic superhero voice while Sean Schemmel’s Goku always sounded like he was out of breath.

Some of you may think Jessica D. Stone may be and odd choice, but I was convinced she would be perfect with her performance of Makoto in the character’s arcade ending:

Goten = Tara Strong

Best known roles: Timmy Turner (Fairly Odd Parents), Twilight Sparkle (MLP: Friendship Is Magic), Ben Tennyson (Ben 10) and Raven (Teen Titans)

One of Tara Strong strongest traits is that she is really damn good at voicing children, both boys and girls. I can’t remember the character or the show she was on, but I do remember her doing a voice that I really feel would be perfect for Goten, at least while he is a kid).

Kibitoshin/Kibito Kai = Kevin T. Collins

Best known roles: Griffith (Berserk) and Red Hood (Gotham)

Kibitoshin is a strange case for me as though I think both Kent Williams & Yūji Mitsuya did a good job playing Kaioshin. I think it was a mistake by the cast director’s in having Kibitoshin voiced by the same person as the Kibito portion of the merge doesn’t come through.

This is why I think Kevin T. Collins would make a good choice. His voice is deeper then Kent’s, while still retaining the more youthful and cocky tones that are present in the character.

Kuririn/Krillin = Jeremy Shada

Best known roles: Finn the Human (Adventure Time)

Why on earth do all the English dub actors voice Kuririn with a nasally tone? Personally, I’ve never seen that in the character who I think, while more mature and cowardly then Goku, still has a childlike nature. This is why I think Jeremy Shada would be perfect for the role.

Mr Satan = Brian Blessed

Best known roles: Prince Vultan (Flash Gordon) and King Richard IV (Black Adder)

Boastful, loud and amazingly confident. Brian Blessed would be perfect for Maaku Satan and I’m surprised nobody in the casting departments haven’t thought of him.

Pilaf = Wallace Shaun

Best known roles: Vizzini (The Princess Pride), Rex (Toy Story) and Grand Nagus Zek (Star Trek: DS9)

Warning: spoiler for Resurrection F in this entry

Like Kent Williams, Chuck Huber did a decent job as Pilaf in the Funimation Job of the first two Dragon Ball series and given him as well as Mai and Shu prominence in the last two Dragon Ball, it’s clear that the character will need a voice.

However, I feel Wallace Shaun would do a better job playing a small imp with delusions of grandeur, can’t imagine why:

Trunks = Brandon Keener

Best Known Roles: Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect

Again another odd choice and I know a few of you are going to make Jokes about calibrations, but I do think Brandon Keener could do a good job for the role. Though not sounding like his Japanese equivalent, I always felt that Trunks voice should have a mix of both Bulma and Vegeta’s vocal quirks.

Vegeta = Nick Landis

Best known roles: Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z Abridged)

I kept flipping on whether or not to include any of the TeamFourStar crew on this list. However, I feel that Landis’s Vegeta is the best of the series and would be great for an official dub.

Like Trunks, Landis’s 80s action hero performance doesn’t really match the more deep posh general that Ryō Horikawa gave the character. But to me, Nick Landis did a far better job representing the Vegeta from the manga.

Videl = Cathy Cavadini

Best known roles: Blossom (Powerpuff Girls)

Again, Kara Edwards did a good job of her in the Funimation dub of Z, I just think Cathy Cavadini could also do a good job.

Huh, I feel that was kind of an anti-climax to end the post on… Oh well.
