So, it's nearly Independence Day here in the States and our Canadian friends just got done celebrating Canada Day which means that it's pretty effectively the middle of summer. (Unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case it's the middle of winter.*) How is your summer going?
Mine is going about as I expected but for the opposite reasons than I expected. I'm taking two graduate classes in a compressed five week format. I've been working on assignments or sitting in class for close to six hours every day of the week, which is fine I figured that would be the case when I registered. But here's the thing, I was looking forward to the geometry class since I used to teach geometry and really enjoyed teaching it and I was not at all excited about the class on curriculum and instruction since I'm not in public schools anymore so I figured there wouldn't be a lot of relevance since the program is geared to k-12 teachers. Boy was I wrong. The curriculum class has actually given me a few things to think about in how I approach my lessons and will probably lead to some changes in my teaching this fall. The geometry class, however absolutely sucks ass. The professor is the worst teacher I've ever had (including a 22 year old grad student who had zero teaching experience before they threw him in front of a class) and sucks all the enjoyment out of the class. I've ranted enough to Mrs. Hatrack and WinnieTheWoot about the terrible job he's doing so I won't bore you with it. Suffice it to say, I've never looked forward to doing the end of course instructor evaluation as much as I am right now.
*Bonus question: Do people in the Southern Hemisphere refer to June, July, and August as Winter or is it still Summer?
