As part of their preparations for next week's launch to deliver them to the International Space Station, Russian cosmonaut Maxim Suraev, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman and German astronaut Alexander Gerst of the ESA planted a tree in Kazakhstan.

The tree planting tradition started with the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, and continued as a ceremony for Soviet cosmonauts before a launch. Now that crews for the International Space Station launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome they carry on the tradition.
