Here’s one of those head pounding examples of wasted potential. An amateur fossil hunter, Edgar Nernberg in Canada has long been a contributor to creationist museums recently found five fish fossils. He knew that the right thing to do was to get them to a (real) paleontologist.

To his credit, he passed the fossils along to the University of Calgary. The fish lived 60 million years ago, just after the extinction of the dinosaurs. This is a critical time in evolution, because after this mass extinction, a lot of species were filling new niches. Of course, Nernberg doesn’t believe that the fossils are that old. Finding the evidence himself isn’t enough. However, researchers are getting the benefit of his discovery, so it’s not a complete loss!
