According to Wired magazine, George Lucas has agreed to let Dark Horse adapt his first draft of Star Wars into an 8-part comic series. From writer J.W. Rinzler's description, this original draft is "closer to Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon in tone, and it’s also closer to Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress — In fact, there even is a hidden fortress in the rough draft.” Oh, and Luke is now a grizzled old general, and Han Solo is a giant green alien.
I'm kind of interested to see how this plays out. Considering Lucas' predisposition towards "improving" on his earlier works, the version he was least happy with should, by logical extension, be the most brilliant piece of science fiction screenwriting ever.
