Here’s an interesting thought piece from the movie blog Birth, Movies, Death (formerly Badass Digest, now with the most awkward name ever) titled “Gender-coding, Heteronormativity, and Pixar’s LAVA” regarding visual representation of genders in media. I thought you guys might be interested in reading it. Spoiler warning for Pixar’s Lava short in the article.
The piece discusses many things in mainstream media such as frequent pairing of “schlubby” man and a hot woman, Hollywood’s compulsion to put a romantic angle in everything, and how female characters are often solely identifiable by their secondary sex characteristics, often in idealized forms. A lot of ideas worthy of serious discussion.
