From the very first time I heard Sail by AWOLNATION, I couldn't get Misfits out of my head. I've seen the lyrics picked apart and applied to Supernatural (sing the word angel, all the SPN fangirls will hunt you in droves), but it's still a Misfits song to me. I've never even watched the official video (just the crazy Vimeo with the mad bendy dancer—Break Ton Neck below). Do you have any songs that are irrevocably associated with any TV shows, movies or other fandoms without having appeared on or with them?

And why? Playlist creation is a big thing in many of the fandoms I'm in, but I've never listened to one. I've never listened to a single new song because someone said "It's TOTALLY John Winchester!" But I have heard songs and thought "Fuck, it's about an angel falling for what he sees as the greater good who's begging Heaven to understand why??"

Sail is nowhere near as on the nose (and often 'on the nose' is clumsy as fuck—who does anything on their nose?) as many songs are. I am awkward trying to resolve/explain what in this song makes me think of Nathan and Simon and those other crazy kids so strongly. Here are the lyrics:

This is how I show my love I made it in my mind because I blame it on my A.D.D. baby This is how an angel dies I blame it on my own sick pride Blame it on my A.D.D. baby Sail! Sail! Sail! Sail! Sail! Maybe I should cry for help Maybe I should kill myself (myself) Blame it on my A.D.D. baby Maybe I'm a different breed Maybe I'm not listening So blame it on my A.D.D. baby Sail! Sail! Sail! Sail! Sail! La la la la la La la la la la oh! La la la la la, La la la la la oh! La la la la la, La la la la la, Sail! Sail! Sail! Sail! Sail! Sail with me into the dark Sail! Sail with me into the dark Sail! Sail with me into the dark Sail! Sail with me Sail! Sail with me

I don't know—I think it's the earnestness and the pain (in the vocal performance) as much as anything else. Give it a listen, maybe you can feel and brain better than I can. Or maybe it will make zero sense.

Anyway—what are your companion songs, so to speak? I'm also crap at listening to new music, so I'm going to try and listen to as many of the suggested songs as possible, especially if you sell it hard...

(huh, the <pre> tag formatting is kinda cool)
