i’m not an anime enthusiast. For the most part, i find i dont enjoy almost all that I attempt to watch; even with the more popular ones. BUT.... but...occasionally, despite all the swinging and missing, I do occasionally hit upon one that just knocks it out of the park.

Knights of Sidonia and Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova are two that popped up on Netflix that grabbed me by the short and curlies and refused to let go! Now, the same has happened with this Sword Art Online.

At first, I thought it was just gonna be a Matrix-type deal, possible with a bit of my childhood Re-Boot thrown into the mix but I was unprepared for just how much they made of the whole MMO aspect, and how is being handles in a such a mature way.

Plus, most episodes only really have a single brief bit of fan service, some none at all. All in all, its feels well written and seem fairly respectful.

I certainly dont wanna spoil anything for someone who hasn’t watched it (although its pretty old apparently so i’m probably amongst the minority there!) but I’m twelve episodes in and the various aspects, implications, conclusions and developments that have happened so far is breathtaking...

All I can say is, so far, I highly, highly recommend taking a look!

EDIT: also found a brief piece Kotaku did on it back in ‘12.
