Released by Interplay in late 1988. The song is “Some Things Never Change,” by Devo, from their seventh studio album, Total Devo (also 1988). (Listen to the full uncompressed version here.) Pretty sure this was the first use of a digitized song on a computer game. Very impressive on a C64 back in the day. (There were also PC and Amiga versions.)

The song is also featured as the main background music, heard throughout the game, composed and arranged by veteran audio engineer David Warhol, who worked on dozens of titles during the 8- and 16-bit eras. It’s actually much more haunting as a chiptune. (I’d embed a gameplay video, but they’re full of Xennials chortling over the footage and READING THE ONSCREEN TEXT ALOUD. I hate those guys.)

Guitar bridge is awesome.

The game is trademarked “Cabana Boys Productions Inc.,” which was the production company that optioned Neuromancer back in the late ‘80s. (Watch the promotional video here!) I have to wonder if Devo and/or Mark Mothersbaugh were going to work on the soundtrack if the movie had been produced. Since Cabana Boys was something of a fly-by-night operation, the adaptation probably would have been less-than-epic, remembered as a cult ‘80s curiosity today. I suppose that still would have been better than Hayden Christensen as Case. We really dodged a slamhound on that one. (Sweet poster, though.)

Slightly OT, but this chiptune cover of “Come As You Are” is pure cyberpunk. (Listen to it, and many other cyberditties, on Unepic Stoned High SID’s YouTube channel.) Maybe they can stick that in the trailer if the movie ever gets made.
