This week’s Face Off is an immunity challenge based on Mattel’s Monster High. In some ways this week was an hour long version of the Foundation Challenges done in other seasons of the show. Results ahead.
McKenzie Westmore meets the All-Stars at Mattel’s corporate headquarters in El Segundo. With her is the Vice President of Design Natasha Berling. The challenge this week is to create life action versions of Monster High characters for a possible Monster High movie. So this week is Mattel doing market research complete with a focus group commenting on the designs and providing input on Natasha’s choice of the winners. Hey, Syfy has bills to pay and I would rather have sponsored tie-ins than the return of wrestling. Though I may draw the line at deodorant tie-ins.
The contestants catch a break since this week they’re judged on the aesthetics of their work and not any technical aspects since Glenn, Ve, and Neville have the week off. Some of the contestants (like me) have no knowledge of Monster High so they have to get up to speed quickly. There are no Bottom Looks this week but the contestants know if they did sub-par work.
Emily and Tyler get Draculaura. Emily is a fan so she excited. Their bubblegum gothic vampire look earns them a Top Look.
Ben and Evan are one of the teams with no prior knowledge of Monster High. They get Skelita Calaveras and make a sugar skull skeleton character who looks like she came from a Dia de Los Muertos party. They’re also a Top Look.
Cig and George also come into the challenge with no prior knowledge or experience in beauty make-up. They tackle Laguna Blue and create a beautiful sea monster that expands upon the doll’s look. Natasha and the focus group love it. Cig and George win the challenge, immunity for next week’s elimination challenge, Monster High merchandise, and a shout-out on Mattel’s Monster High social media accounts.
As always, you can see galleries of this week’s designs, the contestants’ previous work and previous seasons here. Images in this post via screencap, the Syfy website and McKenzie Westmore’s Instagram account.
