The Ozark Howler, Artist Unknown

The Ozark Howler is a massive bear-sized creature with thick legs, a dark black coat and prominent horns. Some accounts consider it to be feline, others describe it as canid. It’s purported to be native to Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri. The creature gained its name from it’s loud, mournful cry, which witnesses described as a cross between a wolf’s howl and an elk’s bugle.

Some cryptozoologists believe the Howler to be a variation of the British legend of the black dog. The black dog legends involved massive canids as well, which usually came out at dusk or the dead of night. The dogs were commonly considered to be harbingers of death or demonic activity, and where the legends of Hellhounds originate.

The Howler was last sighted in Newton County, AR, in 2011. Some believe the Howler to be an internet hoax, or creepypasta, but there have been numerous sightings from people who have no computer access, and well before internet use was widespread.
