Hello all. Welcome to WednesdayBookClub. My name is Geesejuggler and I’m still in bed. Don’t judge me, it’s my day off and I’m tired. Anyways, welcome to the book club.
This week, I read Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy, a YA book about a fat, Dolly Parton loving, teenager in a small town in Texas who decides to join the local beauty pageant. It’s more complicated than that, especially the reason why she actually join the pageant and I just love it. I think I finished it in about 7 hours.
The first thing that struck me is that while she’s an “underdog”, she’s pretty confident about herself (Even when she doesn’t see it) and she’s a good person. I’ve noticed in a few other YA books that while the protagonist is an underdog, they’re still a massive jerkface. I’m sure that it’s done that way for the person to have some good emotional growth along the way but I grew up with that person and it’s not something I wish to revisit. Nope, nope, nope.
Dumplin also does a good job of not pulling the ole “Beauty is on the inside and now time for your makeover!”, but shows the battle of The Person You Want To Be/You Think You Are vs. The Person You Currently Are/What You Perceive Yourself. That’s something I’m constantly battling and I loved how Murphy handled it.
Well, that’s what I read this week.. What about you all?
