The Netflix show Stranger Things calls itself a “love letter to the supernatural classics of the 80's.” While at first glance it may seem to be a nod to the Spielberg-type movies of the time it really delves at least as much into Stephen King territory. And Stephen King agrees.

Stranger Things has its flaws (and goes to some dark places since it is channeling Stephen King) but the performances are what makes it work. Besides veterans like Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Matthew Modine and Cara Buono (playing the polar opposite of her character on POI) there is a group of preteen kids who figure prominently and they come across realistically. The standout is Millie Bobby Brown who you may remember from the BBC America show Intruders who once again is playing a girl who is more than she seems. At first glance at the poster and trailer I didn’t even recognize her and thought the character was a boy because of the short hair and clothing.

No, really, one of these kids is a girl.

Stranger Things is currently streaming on Netflix.
