Amidst dwindling sales forecasts, earlier this year Nintendo pledged to reconsider its usually apprehensive stance on licensing out its stable of IPs - and it looks like the first steps of doing that is Pokémon in Football shirts.

Adidas, the designers of the Japanese National team's strip for this year's Rio 2014 World Cup, have announced that the cast of Pokémon will be backing the team's efforts in the competition too in a special cross-promotion. Pikachu and friends are no strangers to branding hijinks, having appeared on everything in Japan from Trains, Planes, Curries and even Seaweed soup - but this degree of partnership is a first for Nintendo, especially in light of their desire to capitalise on licensing out their famous franchises more often. Maybe we'll see a Pokémon-filled, Inazuma Eleven/Mario All Stars/FIFA style tie-in game too? Football with Pokémon? Hell, I'd play that.

Anyway the real news is LOOK HOW ADORABLE PIKACHU LOOKS IN A FOOTBALL SHIRT:

D'aaw. I'd make a joke about super-effectiveness and Football, but despite being English, I haven't the foggiest about how the bloody thing works. Sorry to disappoint!
