Last night’s episode of Person Of Interest was another of those experimental ones they have done on occasion. It took me a moment to figure out what was going on but once I did it made sense. Spoilers ahead.

The episode started with a different voice over instead of Finch. In fact Finch, Reese and the rest of the Machine Gang aren’t present at all in this episode called “CSI: Cyber.” Instead the plucky teen actress from Nightmare on Elm Street 3 is all grown up playing a psychologist working as part of an FBI “cyber” crime unit along with that guy from Don’t Trust the B—— in Apartment 23 and a standard mix of characters for a TV crime fighting team.

The episode involves what the Machine would call an irrelevant number about “cyber” bullying*. The twist is that the teen “cyber” bullying actually the work of the father’s jilted lover.

But thinking it over it seems that the “cyber” team is actually unknowingly working for Samaritan in something that is a sort of law enforcement counterpart to Operation Northern Lights. Samaritan is feeding the FBI information on deviates who commit “cyber” crimes. The “cyber” team tracks down these criminals in a less lethal version of what Reese and Shaw used to do for Control. Since these “cyber” criminals are also a potential threat to Samaritan’s operations it makes sense for it to take steps to deal with them.

Otherwise this “CSI: Cyber” thing would just be a generic procedural relying on an overuse of jargon.

*I’m not making light of bullying, just the over use of the term “cyber.”
