According to CNN you just might be. Do you enjoy heavy metal? Are your favorite films in the action or horror genres? Do you by chance enjoy the works of Stephen King or Edgar Allen Poe? Do you happen to like guns? If so, you're a mass murderer in the making.
If his Facebook page is any indicator, LaDue is partial to the dark side, and he "likes" assault rifles: the AK-101, Heckler & Koch SL8 and Steyr TMP.
In a photo, he can be seen picking an electric guitar with a skull on its shoulder strap; his preferred bands — more than 190 of them in total — are predominantly heavy metal.
His taste in movies is dominated by blood, gore, combat and fisticuffs. His favorite authors are Stephen King and a more traditional master of literary darkness, Edgar Allen Poe.
LaDue also seems to like to hunt. His avatar is a picture of himself in hunter's orange, posing with a slain deer with a rifle draped over it.
So let's consider:
- While I'm very much on the side of pro-gun control, I do like guns. I'm like Eddie Izzard in that I enjoy guns, but I'd rather they only be used to kill clay pigeons. They are evil after all. If I had to pick a favorite gun it would likely be the H&K MP5.
- I wouldn't say I'm the biggest metal-head in the world, but I do enjoy the genre. I can't say I've ever been inclined to go out and harm someone as a result of listening to music though. Well, I say that, but I guess I should count the first time I heard Justin Bieber. But in that case it wasn't so much hurting people but rather Bieber himself. I'm sure we can all understand that.
- Fisticuffs? Seriously? An article written by CNN in the 21st century describes action films by using the term fisticuffs? Alright. Ignoring that, let's consider how the movies are described. Blood! Gore! Combat! Fisticuffs! Horror! Action! Horror and action films are my two favorite types of movies. And Stephen King is one of my favorite authors. His books are amazing. And Poe is the only poet I like. So...
- As for hunting. Well, I'm not a fan, but millions are, and I suspect the majority of them have managed to not go out and plan a bombing/arson campaign either.
Clearly, I should fit CNN's criteria of people to watch out for. The fact that millions also share the same characteristics yet manage to not be mass murdering psychopaths shouldn't be taken into consideration. It would be nice, just once, to see the media not immediately resort to false stereotypes following an event like this. The man is clearly unwell, but his tastes in entertainment are not the indicator of that. Yes, he likes all those things mentioned, but he's a psycho who happens to also like all those things. I shall end this ranty bit with an Eddie Izzard clip. Takes less than a minute and yet explains it perfectly.
