Miscalibrated Internet Receptor Stalks

Aruki Sumaho

Sounds like the name of a Japanese anime character, but it means "smartphone walking" - which has become a serious problem in Japan. It refers to surfing the Internet, writing emails, and general use of a smartphone while walking.

People are falling off rail platforms because they aren't paying attention to their surroundings. According to the Mainichi Daily News:

There were eleven reported incidents nationwide of people falling off train platforms while using smartphones in fiscal year 2010, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. That number increased to 18 in fiscal 2011.

The BBC reports:

Japan's largest mobile network NTT Docomo erected a sign on a staircase at one of Tokyo's main stations, Shinjuku, which reads: "Walking while using a smartphone is dangerous... But those people probably didn't see this announcement."

Fortunately that's not a problem in the U.S.

Meanwhile, I'm jotting down "Aruki Sumaho" in my notebook. I really want to use that as a character name.
