In today’s io9 there is a post revealing some details about a character in Solo, gleaned from a LEGO set. I was looking at how cool the character is, with his animal skull helmet with words carved in it, and wondered if anybody had figured out what the words were.
Reddit gave it a go a couple of times but ultimately came back empty-handed. They figure some of the letters are not Aurebesh, or are so crudely carved they’re unreadable. Certainly some are too distorted to see and disappear around the edge, and it doesn’t help that the image is flipped, but I gave it a better go and this is what I have determined it says:
THE SALT EDGE
CAN GO NO HIGHER
Admittedly, the “salt” sounds a bit weird, but I have three possible explanations for that. One, it’s not “salt”. Two, it’s the latter end of a longer word, such as “assault” except that would be spelled wrong. Three, maybe it’s on the Spice Mines of Kessell, where there is an abundance of salt. Or Crait, for that matter.
It may be a bit of religious verse, or a curse or something. Anyone else willing to give it a better go, feel free.
I now think, after some suggestions from below, and a comment from designer Glyn Dillon on Instagram, that the lettering isn’t strictly accurate Aurebesh, and they’ve jiggled things around a bit for some aesthetic purpose. Like to annoy nerds like me.
It seems more likely the words are something like:
YOU ARE AT THE LAST EDGE
THE LAST OPENING
THE LAST STAR
YOU CAN GO NO HIGHER
Which sounds suitably ominous.
