Disney gutted their traditional animation division today, cutting 9 veteran animators and 3 others. Nik Ranieri (creator of Lumiere, Hades), Ruben Aquino (Simba, Ursula) , Frans Vischer, Russ Edmonds (Kala, Phoebus), Brian Ferguson, Jamie Lopez, and Dan Tanaka were the names listed. Eric Goldberg and Mark Henn are safe for now, however the Animation Guild is reporting that other veteran animators are being called in to meetings to discuss paycuts and/or buyouts.

For the animation world it's shocking to see so many A-list artists being let go. It was leaked last week that there would be layoffs, but no one imagined it would be such a catastrophic list. I myself am a little fearful they'll soon be shuttering the division entirely and purging the company of all of their classic talent and the legacy they bring.
