Peter Firmin with one of the Clangers and the Soup Dragon.

Peter Firmin who helped create Bagpuss and The Clangers along with a host of other iconic television characters has died aged 89.

Firmin and his partner Oliver Postagate specialised in stop-animation films flavoured with whimsy and surreal humour. Apart from The Master’s favourite aliens The Clangers and saggy old cloth cat Bagpuss, they also gave the world epic fantasy with Noggin the Nog, dragon-fired trains in Ivor the Engine and strange wood sprites in Pogles Wood. He was also part of the creative team that gave us Basil Brush who celebrated his 50th birthday last month.
