There's a really good article in the Atlantic today that outlines the precipice conservatives are dangling from as the civil war between the extreme and moderate factions intensifies in the wake of a government shutdown that accomplished ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. We are close to seeing an all out revolt happen as the Tea Party bolts from the GOP establishment. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. What it feels like to me is a last desperate grasp for power by a bunch of xenophobic, homophobic, anti-science, anti-women's rights, white folks whose numbers are rapidly dwindling. It's kinda like a species who are specialized in a particular environmental niche and suddenly that niche starts to disappear and then, gradually, so do they. I simply can't project a scenario that sustains this type of conservatism without their being some sort of all out cataclysm (nuclear war, zombie apocalypse, etc.) that turns people into fearful reactionaries.
