As shooting on Sherlock Series 3 begins, set videos reveal that Amanda Abbington will join the cast as a character that "significantly impacts upon the lives of John and Sherlock", according to the Radio Times.

Abbington, who has been partnered with Freeman for 12 years, will feature in the first episode, The Empty Hearse, based on The Adventure of the Empty House. In the original Conan Doyle stories at this point, Mary Marston, Watson's wife (who was introduced in The Sign of Four), had passed away - but given the Radio Times' hint, as well as the actress' longstanding relationship with Martin Freeman, could it be possible that Amanda is playing the modern version of Mrs. Watson?
