Cyndi Lauper's Inspiration for Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

In 1982, Captain Sensible, late of UK band The Damned, went solo for a brief period, and my favourite of his songs was called "Wot." A silly song, but very catchy, it used the popular bass line from the song Good Times by Chic, sampled in many other songs since.

The video was a simple affair, but take note of:

The long line of people winding their way through the corridors and streets.

The tall moustached fellow, an impressive Basil Fawlty lookalike.

The large rough looking fellow in the wife-beater tank top.

Also in 1982, alternative UK standup comedian Alexei Sayle, whose shtick was ridiculously silly anarchic rants while wearing a suit two sizes too small, released a single based on one of his catchphrases, called "Ullo John Gotta New Motor."

The video was a simple affair, but take note of:

The small hat over his eyes.

The silly pseudo-aggressive clodhopping walk he does down the street.

And a year later, in 1983, Cyndi Lauper hit the big time with the international hit "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." A cover, no less.

But check out the video. Anything look familiar?
