Hey you, do you think Matthew McConaughey is hot? Well prepare to lose your (lady)boner, cause here is McConaughey as a mustachioed, homophobic cowboy with Aids. Yeah!

So yes, today I saw Dallas Buyers Club. And it's a pretty good movie, about the journey of a man who, faced with certain death, will resort to what he knows best - swindling and peddling. The most interesting aspect of the movie is without a doubt the growing friendship between homophobic Ron (McConaughey) and his transexual business partner Rayon (Jared Leto). Leto is really mesmerizing and completly melts into the character, to the point that while the movie kept referring to the character as "him, I spend the whole movie referring to him as "her" because I just forgot there was a man there - there was just Rayon, the trans-woman (or is it trans-man? I'm never sure). And the best scenes of the movie is when Ron shows that, yes, he really cares about her.

Director Jean-Marc Vallée was a good choice for this - having seen his three previous movies (The Young Victoria and his last two Quebecois film,) I recognized his visual style, which always try to find the surreal in a realistic scene, and it works wonders for all the scenes where Ron's dementia flares up. Also, Vallée had proven he can approach gay characters with total respect with his Quebec mega-hit C.R.A.Z.Y. (really worth tracking down) , and he does it again here.

So, should you see this movie? Absolutely - unless you want to keep your wet dreams of Matthew McConaughey intact.
