Or rather, Dick Spanner with all the nuts tightened together. This is a Gerry Anderson produced show that frequently flies under the radar and it is coming back to DVD this September.
Somewhere between Terrahawks and Space Precinct, the Anderson-Burr crew made 22 six-minute segments of Dick Spanner, P.I. for Janet Street-Porter’s controversial Channel 4 “yoof” programme Network7. The Case of The Human Cannonball was followed by The Case of The Maltese Parrot.
Voiced by the original Scott Tracy, Shane Rimmer, Dick was a robot gumshoe who stumbled through Chandleresque mysteries in the stop-animation feature. Spanner also got a late-night airing on another Channel 4 show.
Puns went into overload in the scripts from creator Terry Adlam, who also worked on Terrahawks. The character even got a make over as Lou Tennant for an Anderson-produced lager advertisement. Lou was voiced by Vivian Stanshall of Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band fame.
