Miscalibrated Internet Receptor Stalks

Discworld Tourism Board

So, for years now, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series has been on my "to read" list. As much as I've been looking forward to it, though, I've just never gotten around to it. That changes now, though. I'm going to start reading just as soon as the library can get me the book I request. That brings me to my question, though. From what I understand, it isn't so much a series as a setting, and there are a bunch different, independent series in it. Given that, where do you think that I should start, and why? Do I need to know what happened in certain books to understand what is going on in others? Thanks for the advice!

(About the top image: That's my cat, Chat. She has few skills, but she excels at hiding from strangers and sleeping. It has my bookshelf in it, so I figured it was relevant enough. Also, the "books" part of the bookshelf apparently got Kinja'ed into the nether. I really have to learn how to work the platform.)
