I was laying in bed last night, thinking about my stalled career prospects, when an idea crept into my head. I've been designing posters, websites, DVD covers, for various projects for the past ten or fifteen years, all self-taught, but because I don't have the ongoing experience and qualifications that employers seek, have had very little luck gaining employment. So, I thought to myself, why not find a way to utilise my skills on my own time, in my own way, and join a growing indie revolution? Why not become an eBook cover artist!
Ideas that come late at night are rarely good ones, but I immediately came up with some titles for fake books to use as my own testbed, each with different styles to try. I quickly scribbled them down, then went straight back to bed and had an excellent night's sleep. Come morning, in the cold light of day, I still thought it was worth a try, so got to work.
I spent most of the morning on one of the ideas, then, happy with those results, and because I work pretty fast, tried a second slightly more ambitious idea in the afternoon. Both of them, for the time I spent on them, worked out pretty well, I think. I am energised and ready to try out another tomorrow. If I can get enough samples together, maybe I can put myself out there and get some paid work out of it.
I used some stock images via Google, and also from DeviantArt here.
