If you only read one historical novel set in the Chinese version of Hell this lifetime; make it this one.
Seriously though, Yangze Choo's The Ghost Bride is very good fantasy (so far.) I'm enjoying it immensely, particularly learning about Chinese mythology against the backdrop of colonial Malaysia. I'd like a bit more characterization of the narrator but I'm chalking it up to historical accuracy right now.
I don't know if it's a cheat since I'm listening to the audiobook instead of looking at words on the page but it is narrated by the author and it's a treat to get to hear the story in her voice and know how she pronounces names and places.
