So Captain Marvel now has both a star (Brie Larson) and a director (well, two directors — Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck). And according to Kevin Feige, filming will begin in February 2018. But who else should be cast in the movie?
Of course. We’ve known for months that Brie Larson would play Carol Danvers, so putting her on a fantasy casting list is kind of silly. But still, I’m doing it, because I think that out of all the candidates for the role, she’s still the best one for sheer acting chops alone. Go see Short Term 12 or Room if you don’t believe me.
Also, if this isn’t the best image ever, I don’t know what is.
Tracie Thoms is another great actress that has yet to break into film yet, but has a long, long list of television credits, including Cold Case, Love, and the tragically short-lived Wonderfalls.
As shown by her stint on Cold Case, she can play the hard, by the book detective, but in Wonderfalls, she also had a very sarcastic and playful edge. Which is just perfect for Monica Rambeau, who was a lieutenant in the New Orleans harbor patrol before she became a superhero and then a member of the Avengers and Nextwave. Also, I really, really want to see a Nextwave spin-off.
Yeah, that’s right. I went there. For one thing, I think it would be hilarious if Reynolds is pulled into the MCU to play Mahr Vehl just as Josh Brolin was pulled into Deadpool 2 to play Cable. And it would kind of be a hilarious commentary on his previous role in Green Lantern.
In any case, Reynolds as a Kree Captain who ends up befriending Carol Danvers and then dying would definitely be something different for him to play. Also, the directors, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, already previously directed him in Mississippi Grind, so it’s not out of the question they could call him again.
The fact that Brie Larson was the best person for the job of Carol Danvers doesn’t make any of the other candidates bad. Especially not Yvonne Stahovski, whose shown her acting chops in Chuck, 24: Legacy, and the upcoming Handmaid’s Tale. Playing an interesting and complex sociopathic villain would be an interesting turn for Stahovski, who has normally played heroes, but I think she would be perfect for the role of Karla Sofen, who finds a Kree gravity stone and becomes the supervillain Moonstone.
Arthur Darvill’s turn as Evil Rip Hunter on Legends of Tomorrow was so much fun, I want to see him playing a villain even more now. And him playing an evil Kree with blue skin would definitely compliment Karen Gillen’s turn as the blue-skinned Nebula. I mean, come on, you know you want to see him playing a hammy villain again.
I’m not sure what other characters the movie will include (perhaps Doctor Minerva?), but this seems like a good place to stop for now. What are your ideas for who should play whom?
