Miscalibrated Internet Receptor Stalks

So I was thinking of saving all this for Wednesday's Android Update post, but we're just so close to having new Nexus devices in our hands that things are starting to leak and rather than have people see the info on their own and potentially brick a device or what have you I felt it was smarter to just give people fair warning.

In no particular order here's the friendly notices I have for you all.

Update to Lollipop, who's getting it and when?

First off, two "old" devices will be getting updated to Android L. The Nexus 7 (2012) and the Nexus 4. Both were previously unlisted in "the following devices will get the update" posts and info released by Google, that has been clarified and both are getting the update. When? Your guess is as good as mine, but Google is usually really good about getting updates rolled out (slowly but surely) in as little as a month after officially releasing a device with the new Android version.

NVIDIA has also promised an update to the Shield Tablet to Android L.

As far as what else is going to get Android L, no word yet from any of the OEMs with the exception of Motorola, who had the following to say about the subject.

Once Android 5.0 L is officially released, we intend to bring this latest upgrade to many of our other Motorola devices, as well. This includes Moto X (1st and 2nd Gen), Moto G (1st and 2nd Gen), Moto G with 4G LTE, Moto E, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini. We're still working out the details on timing and the upgrade depends on our partners' support so stay tuned to our software upgrades page for the latest and greatest.

Motorola, you rock!

Sony has stated the following.

We'll be making Sony Mobile's Android "L" upgrade available for the entire premium Z series*: including Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition devices will be first up – we'll be back with more details on that soon.

We'll start the upgrade at beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series – continuing thereafter for all remaining devices above.

You go, Glenn Co- I mean, Sony!

And HTC has come out with their own news on the update.

HTC is excited about the new features in the Android L release and we can't wait to share them with our customers. We are committed to updating our flagship HTC One family as fast as possible as part of our HTC Advantage program. We will begin rolling out updates to the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) worldwide within 90 days of receiving final software from Google, followed shortly thereafter by other One family members and select devices. HTC Advantage protects your smartphone investment, ensuring you have the best smartphone experience long after purchase.

That's everything known at present time as to who is getting the updates and when. Beyond that, you'll know when I know.

I hear apps are leaking already, should I install them? Or better said, can I install them?

You can, assuming you're rooted that is. Otherwise you'll run into the "there is already an app with the same name blah blah blah" message that I've seen before on unrooted devices.

Look, Lollipop is basically right around the corner from hitting our devices. If you aren't already tinkering regularly with this sort of stuff then I highly suggest you just wait for the official updates (of both Lollipop and the apps) to hit your phone. You can mess things up, run into all kinds of issues and so on and so forth.

Patience is a virtue for a reason.

Blah blah blah, Mr. Rain On My Parade!

This is correct. In point of fact I have a homemade birthday card from a few years ago that my lovely and awesome friend Melody made. It specifically showed a dark and stormy rain cloud on the front, which she drew herself, and inside it said the following.

You are the dark and stormy rain cloud on my sunny day.

I rain on parades and sunny days. [shrugs] What can I say? It's my thing and I'm known for it. I can't change who I am.

In my defense though I'm just trying to keep you all from having issues. Hate on me for that if you want, but you can't say you weren't warned.

Alright, you still suck but just a little less. Regardless, what I'm hearing is there's leaks and I can maybe haz?

Yes, you can maybe haz.

I advocate nothing, but if you've got a Nexus 4 and know what you're doing I can maybe sorta point you to a thread where you should go and have some serious Lollipop related fun. What you will find when you get to said hypothetical thread is something that would make every single one of us jealous as fuck. Yeah, this includes me. Lucky Nexus 4 owning... [proceeds to ramble on slowly to the point of just muttering quietly to self]

There are other leaks I won't link to, but if you know where to go then you'll be able to find them. Keeping in mind that, again, if you aren't rooted these won't do you much good.

I will say this though, goddamn I can't wait to have a Material Google Play Music app.

I want!

Well, can you give us anything from Lollipop that we can have now safely?

Sure, why not?

You don't have to say it, I know already that I am a generous god.

Beyond that, anything else Lollipop related you can share?

No. I can, however, point you to a series of articles over at Android Police that dive in like you wouldn't believe to everything awesome that Lollipop is bringing. The amount of reading I've been doing is insane and the amount of awesome we shall soon be on the receiving end of us even more insane.

Is that all you have for us?

Pretty much. In non-related news, I'm selling my old Moto X. You can see it here, although I can provide more pics if requested. (Of course you can also check my original write-ups on it here and here.)

If anyone from the Odeck is genuinely interested in buying the device give a shout out in the comments and I'll even lower the price insanely just for you special people. : ) Although that might have to happen outside of Swappa because there are rules there and whatnot. (Also because the one thing I hate about Swappa is the whole "must use PayPal" thing. I dislike PayPal for a number of reasons, not the least of which is you can donate to the KKK and other hate groups through there but you can't donate to Edward Snowden's legal defense and other similar things because REASONS! So I can give to hate but I can't give to the defense of a guy who finally got my friends to stop saying "this guy is beyond paranoid"? Your priorities are seriously screwed up, guy. And I ain't your friend, buddy!)

Oh and I have the order receipt and everything, so you're good on "does it still fall under warranty should anything go wrong?" Yes, I gave her the banana with the dope inside.

Wait. Shit. Sorry, that's a default quote for me to say "affirmative". It's from Congo, which is an entertaining and very quotable movie. If you haven't seen it, shame on you!

But yes, the phone still is covered by warranty and will be until February 2015. So if you're genuinely interested just let me know and we'll talk.

And THAT is literally all I have for you all today. Well, minus my favorite scene from Congo that is. (I even incorporated one of my favorite lines from this scene into the eulogy I wrote way in advance for my best friend. Yes, I am totally willing to share it! I read it to him while we put up Christmas lights this past year at his house and he loved it. "You better read that at my funeral." "Oh, I will." There's one other eulogy I've written about cats and a female friend, but you all might think it a bit harsh. Even if she also loved it when I read it to her!)

Now, you cats take care. Hit the road, as they say. And have a nice day.
