IEEE Spectrum - a publication of the professional society Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers - published a version of Gregory Travis’ excellent blog article on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 MCAS debacle. Travis has spent decades both as a private pilot and a software engineer and has an informed perspective on this topic.

Having worked on DO-178C certified avionics systems myself (albeit only at Design Assurance Level D, in which a failure is deemed an inconvenience to the flight crew), I am still really surprised that something so crucial to the safety of the aircraft didn’t get closer scrutiny. This is going to be a classic case study in systems engineering and system failures.
