As of BoxOfficeMojo's last report from October 15th, Guardians of the Galaxy has reached a worldwide box office total of $705M. Since it just opened in China on the 10th, I think it's pretty safe to assume that there's gonna be a few more millions coming their way. What's interesting about that is, Guardians is less than $10M away from eclipsing both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Amazing Spider-Man 2 in total worldwide box office. It's already beaten Man of Steel and Thor: The Dark World; if it does indeed pass those other two, then that will mean a brand new property about a little-known comic will have beaten two of the most famous, popular superheroes in comic history (or, in my frank opinion, really just pale, unheroic imitations of them) and two Avengers. But if it can push even further and surpass $746M, it will have even defeated X-Men: Days of Future Past, the fifth installment of the franchise that started off the modern superhero genre. That would be quite a feat for the movie that so many people (myself included, I'll freely admit) thought was gonna be Marvel Studio's biggest risk.
Update: As of the October 19th numbers, Guardians' international total is up to $732M, leaving The Winter Soldier and Amazing Spider-Man 2 way behind, and coming up quite strongly on Days of Future Past. That is quite a feat indeed.
