While it hasn’t officially been announced that Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn will be taking over the voices of Crow and Tom Servo in the new version of MST3K alongside yellow-jumpsuited host Jonah Ray, you can clearly hear their voices in this new video that Joel released for the ongoing #bringbackMST3K kickstarter project, which is currently about $830,000 short of doubling the number of episodes they can release from 3 to 6.
While Baron’s Tom voice will take some getting used to, Hampton does a pretty passable Crow, probably closer to Trace’s original voice than Bill’s. Still, the robots voices have changed before (it’s always a little bit jarring when I pop in a 1st season episode and hear Josh’s version of Tom, but after a few seconds, I acclimatize) and hearing these three guys in the theater with the silhouettes... well... I think it’s all going to be okay. It feels natural, and while many of us have a particular preference for either Mike or Joel, I think the show is in safe hands, and will be just as awesome and nerdy as we remember it. (Also, keep in mind that even though Joel may no longer be in front of the camera, he’s still going to be part of the writer’s room and guiding the project as a whole.)
For fans who are still on the fence about donating to the new series, I encourage you to take a look at the video above, and tune in to the 2015 Turkey Day Marathon. While we know Joel will be presenting this year, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we see a couple of special guest appearances from the new cast as well.
