I’ve had a first-gen 3DS for over four years now, but it doesn’t get much play — I’m not a hardcore Nintendo fan, and will usually only buy Mario or Zelda games for Nintendo’s consoles, with the occasional Starfox, Metroid, or Donkey Kong title thrown in for good measure.

That said, I am crazy about those properties, even though I’ve never really warmed to the 3DS — the unit has always felt too small and cramped in my hands, the absence of a second analog stick has always rankled me (which is why I never was that excited about the PSP), and the 3D is generally horrible. It’s probably for these reasons that I’ve never actually finished any games for the platform. (Also the aesthetics are kinda weird — I always thought it looked like it had an overbite when it was closed.)

But it looks like with the New XL, Nintendo has solved a lot of those problems — the screen is bigger and looks a lot more vivid, the auto-follow 3D looks nice (if kinda creepy), and the larger size and extra stick would appear to have resolved any control issues I might have with the unit. I don’t foresee me buying a lot of new games for the system, but it would probably add tremendous value to my existing library. What say you?
