Have you ever played at a LAN party? Or played a board game with friend and family? Or played some online video game like a MOBA or a Fighter and decided to make your own house rules? Either because to give everyone a fair chance or because you feel it makes the game more fun?
We all have them like the person who refuses to hit someone while their dizzy in Street Fighter. Or the players who agree to no rushing in strategy games. Or the people who add live grenades in the bucket instead of the pirate in Pop-Up Pirate.
So as such, what are your own personal house rules?
My big one is one that will make a lot of you go, “What!” at, but I feel it makes many games better without it. If I’m the Dungeon Master, my big house rule is no alignments, at all.
The reason is that I’ve always found the alignments restrict actual role-playing as they don’t allow players to create well rounded characters that act in human ways and have their own personal moral codes. But instead, caricatures that follow strict, sometimes arbitrary rules that fail to account for personal morals or situations where it makes sense to break alignments to do the right thing. You can probably guess I go true neutral if I have to choose can’t you.
It’s the same with video games as well. Games like the first two Mass Effects and Knights of the Old Republic that punish players who wants to be grey or well rounded and instead force you to be extreme Paragon or Renegade to get the best stuff I feel are weaker as a result because they punish you for role-playing.
So as such, no alignments. So long true neutral, bye bye chaotic evil and f*** off lawful good!
And for me personally, it makes D&D far more enjoyable and fun without it. Better role-playing, actual discussions about morality and ethics and more interesting characters. It’s just all together more fun.
Also if you’re a Dungeon Master who punishes players who break alignments by reducing levels. Just don’t.
