This scene from the Japanese trailer of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been gnawing at me since it hit the internawebs, and now I know what bothered me so much.
Chewbacca’s fingers are freaking me out.
Though the certainly appeared on screen in the original trilogy, Chewbacca’s hands were not so prominently displayed. I never really thought about them.
I guess, like many others, I just assumed they were as fur-covered as the rest of him.
Heck, the Kenner toys certainly suggested as much.
But of course, the human-like fingers are canon. Here’s part of a publicity shot:
Still, those fingers seem very much like they belong to a living creature. A bit too human-like I’d think, but still, they suit the general aesthetic. Notice though, that they are a bit more brown, and don’t seem so much like rubber gloves as they do in the gif up top.
This realization of incongruity hit me when looking at the Disney Infinity figure. His fingers are clearly brown, and his fingernails give the hands an air of credibility.
I just hope when the film comes out, if we see more of Chewie’s mitts, that they have fingernails at the very least, and that they aren’t just shiney rubber gloves.
