I had satellite tv installed* a few months ago & good grief there’s some complete rubbish on the documentary channels.
There’s far to much reality programming & nonsense about aliens masquerading as documentaries with the odd real documentary slipped in every so often almost as an afterthought. In a way it’s good though because I’d wondered if I was missing out when I didn’t have these channels, but apparently not & it makes me even more glad of the BBC who’ve recently given me series like:
Ancient Greece: The Greatest Show on Earth (story of ancient Greek theatre)
Lost Kingdoms of South America (about Chachapoya, Tiwanaku, Muisca, Tairona & Chimor)
Dreaming the Impossible: Unbuilt Britain (buildings & large scale projects that where never built)
While Discovery** & the History channel show UFO files, Ancient Aliens, Shipping wars, Gold rush, Pawn stars, Auction Hunters, Duck Dynasty, Alien Mysteries & Naked & afraid. I mean I know commercial channels are businesses & they’re only in it for the money, but surely they can & should do better? Or am I being unrealistic & expecting to much to want factual science, history, arts & nature programs & not just reality shows from them?
(*free when I changed isp
**Ok, they make Mythbusters. I’ll give them 1 point for that)
