I Really Like Smut and Garabatos, So Ask Me About That... or Anything! ... And México...

Hi, everyone! I’m here to make you laugh a bit, to make you hungry, and to answer whatever you want to know about me, drawing, México, culture, food, corruption, education and funny tidbits about my country and my state: Puebla. Here you’ll find some info already... things that I find interesting and I think you might like to know... Like the smut I like. You would like it too, I’m sure. You just have to want to try new things.

About me
For I am teacher, destroyer of minds... also a designer and a marketing consultant. Mostly a teacher. I dable in geekery, music, and visual arts. That’s where Garabatero comes from. Garabato is a doodle, basically. So I am the one who draws!

I teach at a university level, mostly undergrad, mostly business, economics, and marketing. Sometimes I teach in english, and sometimes I teach english. I MIGHT also start working at middle-school level. I am in limbo right now about some job openings there to teach design techniques. My personality is a little bit addictive, compulsive (although not very impulsive), introverted, a bit depressive, and I always have songs in my head, which makes me really annoying as I hum and sing spontaneously. I also have a compulsive need to make weird, nerdy, or funny quips. I am that uncle who will make the inappropriate joke.

Main topic - Mexico (Puebla): Culture, Corruption & Weird Stuff We Eat

Puebla. So I am Mexican, and I live in my natal city, Puebla. Puebla is a lovely place... if you don’t mind the people! We have a little bit of a reputation as smug, ignorant, insufferable pricks. But we have delicious food and sweets! We also have an active volcano, the biggest pyramid in the world (that is buried below a catholic church, of course!), more than 5 million people, the biggest historic downtown area in the Americas, a shit-ton of incredible-looking churches and sights, a shit-ton of universities. We also probably have a record on potholes, because there’s new ones every time it rains... and it rains 9 months of the year. Did I mention we just discovered that there’s tunnels underground the city? There were stories. Legends. But the tunnels now have been confirmed.

That’s a photo I took of the Cathedral in Puebla

Puebla City is OLD. It’s in the actual middle of Mexico and it was designed to be a city where the people traveling from one place to another could rest. Puebla is cheap, it is one of the cheapest states in the country. We have also some of the poorest and richest people in the country. A third of the state lives in the city of Puebla, but the rest lives in other smaller towns. Most of those towns are very poor. Some of them don’t even speak Spanish, or use money.

We do have a Tiffany’s, the Audi Plant (and Voltswagen), one of the most expensive country clubs in the Americas, and some other luxury stuff. Also... do you like celebrating 5 de mayo? thank us, because that’s a celebration exclusively in Puebla. Also the Mole.

The food and the smut: So in Mexico we eat a lot of weird stuff. Puebla is no exception, and some plates are from here look awesome and some would make you pause a little bit. Sweet Potato sweets are a big thing here.

Mole Poblano is that brown stuff with chocolate and chile you see in Mexican restaurants. Chiles en nogada are god-sends... and I mean that in the way that they are delicious and invented by nuns. Now let’s get weird. Do you like tacos? OK. Want something mostly only sold in Puebla? Yes! Come and eat a Taco Arabe (arabian taco)... which is made with wheat tortillas and pork... yup that sounds Arabian enough, my little grass-hoppers.

Speaking of grass-hoppers. How about a tasty snack of grass-hoppers? This is not from Puebla specifically, but if you come to Cholula (not the salsa) grab a bag of Chapulines. They’re tasty, crunchy, and the legs feel funny in your mouth. How about some ant eggs? Taste the Escamoles, which are served usually with a spicy sauce and you eat them in tacos.

Oh, and the smut. The delicious corn smut. Grab some huitlacoches and eat something healthy, tasty, a bit spicy, and fungi. There’s more food, so ask away!

Corruption and safety. Mexico is corrupt. There’s no going around that. Puebla is no exception. A kind of slavery is a very hidden, but still present thing. Mexico has a lot of violence going on. Puebla is actually pretty safe! Relatively speaking. It’s safer than most big towns in the U.S. in the sense of violent crimes and murder. It is still wise not to walk alone at night in some neighborhoods. I have gotten things stolen several times. I also was mugged once, and it was the nicest mugging ever. Still cost me money though.

Income inequality is gigantic in Puebla. The culture of corruption is palpable in Mexico. We even have a common phrase when people want a new party to win: “It’s time for others to have the chance to steal from us.” I can talk for hours of how terrible our governor is.

Mexico is VERY catholic, but the laws (and people in general) are very much for separation of state and church. Fortunately for this atheist. Mexico is pretty homophobic, but the laws are actually not! Fortunately for this gay man. However it’s a mixed bag. We don’t have hate crime legislation (and I am for that), but we do have laws against hate speech (I am against those types of laws). Still didn’t help poor Bárbara Lezama a few years back, who was a trans woman activist who was tortured and beaten to death. The crime was never solved.

So I like to draw. A lot. I mostly make digital illustration now. I use an iPad, and Sketch Club. However I love doing stuff in water color. It is my favorite technique. Most of my work is original, sometimes I do fan art. It is a hobby that I love and I will keep pouring time and money into it, and probably open some shops (online mostly) around that hobby. Themes for my drawings: Fantasy, Sci-fi, weird things, and cartoon scenes, abstract, or whatever is the mood of the day. Want to know about techniques? Best practices? Suggestions? Ask away!

So I work as a designer. Sometimes people ask me for posters, magazines, websites, logos, brand manuals, and several other weird things.

So I do marketing consulting. My first masters was on this (the second was weird, man!). But I mostly work with very small businesses, helping with strategic planning. I teach more than I do. I also do some market research.

So I play the piano and sing. And I am terrible at both, but I keep doing it! I even have composed a few small pieces. And I collect (cheap) musical instruments.

I am rude and sarcastic. But very loving. Inappropriately so. I also seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Tim Minchin and Garfunkel and Oates.

Ask anything. I might respond with a drawing. Probably not. But maybe! I’m not Crashed!
