What a morning. I get a bit ranty after the jump.

I had to drive to Burbank for a written exam. Of course since it was during the morning rush hour it took almost an hour and a half to go about 35 miles. At one point I was really concerned about being late and not being let in.

I made it in time and joined the crowd of people waiting outside the Burbank public library. There were about 80 people taking the test at that session. 80 people times 3 sessions would be 240 people competing for 1 opening as a Burbank city engineer assistant. Despite the title, the job requires a BS in civil engineering or having an Engineer-In-Training certification (I have both).

The test itself was 120 questions on math, chemistry, engineering, and report writing. It was mostly general knowledge but since there were no calculators or references allowed you actually had to know a fair amount of stuff. I also realized how much I had become used to having a calculator handy when I was multiplying and dividing large numbers by hand. Some of the questions were tougher, like the recommended spacing of manhole covers for a sewer line. The test was multiple choice so at least I answered everything.

Anyway, the people with the top test scores will be notified to come in for interviews. I think I did okay on the test but I have no idea if I'll make the cutoff score for an interview.
