Miscalibrated Internet Receptor Stalks

Lance or lancet--We don't have those

I tried to buy something at the drug store today. They didn't have any. Most of the employees didn't even know what I was talking about.

Showed them this growing bright red thing on my finger. They pointed at the bandages. No, I don't need those. I made little slashing motions. Still nothing. I said, look, I need something to cut this open. Still nothing. Somebody finally went to ask his boss, and then came back and said they didn't have anything like that.

Ended up buying razor blades and going home.

Now, it has been more than twenty years since I have needed such a thing, and I was told back then, hey, you shouldn't do that, except with sterile stuff you buy at the drug store. Everybody else just gets pins and such from the sewing kit, but I thought today I'll be a grownup and go to the store and buy the actual thing made for this purpose, and they didn't have any.

I go home and wonder if I totally said the wrong thing. Nope. Plenty of lancets for sell online. Why can't I buy them at the drug store?

And, yes, I know I'm not supposed to do this, but it has been a couple of days and it looks worse, so I figured it was time to do something before my fingers went numb.
