I've lived in the Bay Area for the past 20 years, and it's been astonishing how the housing prices have soared. While it has meant tighter budgets for many, it has pushed others to and past the brink of poverty.
A new mom paying $1000/month to live in a garage. A family of 4 with two working parents having to live in a homeless shelter. A teen's idea of rolling in gold is being able to afford a $300 mattress. A 2.5 year wait list for a mom and her daughter to be able to get off the streets.
It's a fucking shame that this is the reality for so many people, and that it'll get worse if things keep progressing as they have. Soaring inequality, over crowded neighborhoods, and a drought with no end in sight. I am not optimistic about the short term future of this area.
