Mortal Kombat XL: Is It Worth It?

Last year, Capcom announced they were not making multiple versions of Street Fighter V like Super, EX or Ultra because it annoyed customers and just split the user base. In 2016, Warner Bros releases Mortal Kombat XL, a new version of Mortal Kombat X that comes out less then a year after the original did. Is it worth it?

Now of course, you can buy most of the content via the Kombat Pack 2, similar to how you were able to upgrade from Super to Ultra SFIV. This is what you get with the new expansion:

  1. Four new characters. Bo Rai Cho, Triborg, Alien and Leatherface.
  2. All previous DLC.
  3. Two new costume packs (three is you pre-ordered the game or expansion).
  4. New dialogue during the opening of fights.
  5. New stage fatalities.
  6. Return of the classic stage, the Pit.
  7. New concept art.
  8. Improved online multiplayer (which seems like the thing you would add in a patch not an expansion).

From what I understand, the only content you don’t get if you just by the expansion pack is an alt costume for Scorpion.

It’s a shame that there are no new women in the expansion like Sindel, Skarlet or Jade. Or if they included Vasquez from Aliens as a skin for Sonya like they did for Carl Weathers when the Predator DLC came out. That would have been cool.

In sort of a not cool move, the first thing they promote in the DLC ad banner at the top centre of the screen are new costumes that you can only unlock if you buy the mobile version of the game and do certain challenges there. Kind of a crappy move in my opinion, especially since I just paid quite a bit of money for all the new content.

On a small technical note, I’ve noticed that there has been some weird drops in the frame-rate during cutscenes since I downloaded the new content.

So is it worth it? Depending on what difficulty you are playing at, you can beat all the new characters in arcade mode in under 1-3 hours. Plus seeing all the costumes (if you care about them) will take about an extra 30-45 minutes.

For the Kombat Pack 2, at its current price ($24.99/£19.99), I’d say the price is a bit too steep and if you are not a big Mortal Kombat fan, I’d wait until the price has lowered to about $19.99/£14.99 before buying.

As for Mortal Kombat XL, don’t buy it if you already have the game and for those who don’t, again wait until the price drops.

And yes, it sucks for all the PC users who will miss out on the new content. That was a crappy move on WB’s part.
