Mrs. Overclock and I completed watching the third, and so far last, season of STRANGER THINGS last week.
Prom queen and straight A high school senior (and later graduate) Nancy Wheeler seems *awfully* proficient with firearms. During the course of the series she uses a revolver, a bolt action rifle, a pump shotgun, and a semi-automatic pistol. She’s the *only* one of the scooby gang of kids and teens that we see doing any shooting, other than in season one when she and her friend Jonathan practice; he can’t hit the broadside of a barn, and she hits the target on the first try... even though, it must be said, her grip technique sucks.
Here’s the thing: Jonathan asks her if she knows how to shoot. She doesn’t say “no”. She says “Have you met my parents?”
Later, when Jim Hopper, who is the chief of police in their small rural town in 1980s Indiana, asks if anyone knows how to use the bolt action rifle he’s holding, Nancy immediately says “I do”, and it becomes clear that in fact she does.
One of the great things about STRANGER THINGS is it is chock full of great female characters - kids, teens, and adults. Nancy is just one of them.
So where did Nancy learn to shoot?
I hope that in season four or five we learn that her mom (who has become increasingly interesting as the series has progressed) taught her.
“Honey, we both know men are dickheads. There may come a time when you need to know how to do this.”
