This past weekend was the annual regatta at the Herreshoff Marine Museum, which is on the site of the old Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, which in turn was the site of General Ambrose Burnside's gun works. Cocktail fact of the day: Burnside's facial hair gave us the word "sideburns."
Nat Herreshoff, "the Wizard of Bristol," was perhaps the greatest naval architect ever - he designed and built more America's Cup-winning boats than any other individual, and changed the shape of what we think of when we imagine 'a sailboat.' He was also an MIT dropout and most probably somewhere on the autism spectrum. Clever fact: his home, steps away from the business on the harbour, was called Love Rocks.
I was crew on a little boat built in 1917 - we took second overall in class. WhooHoo!
