Or The Empire Creaks Back
Amazon are taking pre-orders for the Star Wars Marvel UK Omnibus a massive 808-page hardcover volume that promises lots of goodies never seen in America. Now I am slightly confused, because while Empire Strikes Back Monthly included strips by Steve Moore, Alan Moore, Alan Davis and John Stokes I’m not sure that would extend to 808 pages worth. The listing does cite the Star Wars strip from Pizzazz which was reprinted in Star Wars Weekly but that was originally published in the USA. I suppose covers, pin-ups and articles might provide a lot of padding.
Marvel UK’s Star Wars Weekly launched in February 1978 with black and white reprints of the Roy Thomas -Howard Chaykin adaptation of the original movie. We got a free cardboard X-Fighter tucked inside the first issue. The adaptation was spread out over the first twelve issues and remaining pages had a mix of material from Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction and other SF orientated Marvel comics. Rumour has it that Archie Goodwin and Carmine Infantino worked to the UK schedule when producing some of the early Star Wars comics. Luckily we didn’t get an Apeslayer moment. At its height, Star Wars Weekly outsold 2000AD.
The new omnibus also includes The Star Wars: Official Collectors Edition, a glossy gorgeous beast (and I hope a copy still lurks in my stuff) packed with behind the scenes photos and articles about the production of the movie. In someways, it is the kind of item that warrants its own dedicated reprint. But what ever the content, this new omnibus collection will become available to delight and horrify readers in September.
