14 hours later and I… I still don't know how to react to Man of Steel. MOS is an okay movie, a good movie and it subverts superhero tropes/convention pretty HARD!!!! Infact, don't think of MOS as a typical superhero movie, it's more in the vein of a Sci-fi movie featuring Superman. Also, if Superman(1978) is your only idea or concept of superman (or worse, you are hung up on nostalgia) then it's best you avoid MOS.

You know how every non comicbook reader (and even some comicbook readers) after reading a superhero comic goes "why the hell doesn't (insert hero) of choice just kill-shoot-leave villain to die ", well MOS is for them. It's a "grown up" aka "realistic" superhero movie. MOS doesn't hold your hand and force feed you a black and white concept of morality, this is shades of grey all around…. literally, even the color palette is grey.

And with that dark/gritty shade of grey morality comes my major gripe. I've no problem with "dark/gritty", but MOS major problem IMHO is that Superman never gets to really "shine" as a symbol of idealism/hope/optimism in this dark, dark world. There are moments of brilliance, but it's akin to a candle in a dark hallway as opposed to a powerful torch illuminating the room. Ultimately, this is a movie that will divide fans, you either love it or hate it. I simply like it. Hopefully the sequel would be more "fun"/lighter. I give it a B+.
