Parallels: a sci-fi movie begging to be a TV series

So I just watched Parallels, which Wikipedia actually lists as a TV show — which I damn well hope happens! The show unfortunately shares its name with other recent stuff, as well as some kind of software, but it just got released on Netflix if that helps anyone find it. I definitely recommend you do.

PARALLELS is a science-fiction adventure series that follows the story of a small band of people traveling across parallel earths. The group is led by an estranged brother and sister, Ronan and Beatrix Carver, who are looking for their father. What they discover is that their family is shattered across multiple earths. The question is: can they put their family back together again?

Sure, it’s basically the same premise as Sliders, but I like this cast better, and there are mysteries built in that Sliders didn’t really have. Including a mysterious building that I can’t say anything else about because spoilers. Also: modern budget and effects.

As a standalone movie, the film has pacing issues, to a degree. Basically, it makes more sense as a pilot (as it apparently is) than a movie, as very little is resolved.

The characters also need better development; while each of them gets their “moment,” we don’t get much insight into any of them besides Ronan — a deeply flawed and contradictory character. But in an interesting way.

Damn, reviews are harder than I thought. I’m sitting here trying to encapsulate without giving stuff away, and it’s not going well. Clearly this is not where I’m going to make my millions.

Anyway, the thing’s on Netflix streaming; I’ve found nothing to tell me when or if more episodes will happen, but if you’ve got an hour and a half that you want killed with some new and interesting sci-fi, you could do way worse.

EDIT (May 2015): A recent tweet from the show-runner indicated that they are making more. I don’t know what network, when it’ll air, or anything else. But they’re making more!
