With the discovery of four new chemical elements earlier this week, somebody has already created a petition to name Element 117 “Octarine” after the ‘colour of magic’ created by the late great Terry Pratchett. It fits surprisingly well, considering that octarine is supposed to be a greenish-yellow purple color visible only to wizards and cats, and the ‘ine’ ending is consistent with the other elements in the halogen group (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine).


After only a couple of days, the petition has already received over 25,000 signatures. Not quite as many as the 31,808 people who petitioned Death to bring back Sir Terry, but it’s still early days yet (and this one probably has a higher chance of success.)
