BBC Radio4 & 4 Extra started a 14 part series of dystopian sci-fi adaptations & dramas today with Billions by Ed Harris & a new adaptation of The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury, followed tomorrow by The Problem with Talitha by Lauren Beukes & the first part of a new adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick, then by ten more stories over the next two weeks.
I've only listened to the first two so far so I don't know if the rest of the series will be as good, but before Radio 7 merged with Radio 4 to become 4 Extra & had its budget cut* there used to be a fair amount of sci-fi on BBC Radio, but for the last few years it seems like they've just stopped trying & there's been very little new material produced, so any new sci-fi tends to get my attention. I know money's very tight at the moment partly due to the continuing freeze on the licence fee, but after the switch the contrast between the sci-fi friendly Radio 7 & 4 Extra has been a little stark & they just don't seem to care about science fiction that much any more.
*as they'd threatened to do with 6music & Radio 2
