It’s smegging official! Red Dwarf will be back for two new seasons of 6 episodes each, to be broadcast on UK
cable digital something-or-other channel Dave in 2016 and 2017. The news broke at this year’s Dimension Jump convention, and series co-creator Doug Naylor has confirmed that all four main cast members will be returning, he’ll be resuming writing and directing duties, and both series will be filmed back-to-back towards the end of 2015 in front of a live studio audience at Pinewood studios, as all proper Red Dwarf should be! (Since the series is often saddled with the nearly impossible task of shooting science fiction on a sitcom budget, hopefully being able to spread the cost of sets, props, and prosthetic over two seasons will help them add a few extra £s to their meager SFX budget.)
After 2012’s Series X surprised everybody by actually being funny (well, with the exception of Entangled and any of the bits featuring the medi-computer), I have high hopes for series XI and XII. Maybe this year we’ll even see a Skutter! Fans craving news about the next two series should check in periodically with Ganymede & Titan, who tend to be first on the scene about these things.
And now... let the celebratory Red Dwarf dance party begin!
